![]() Alexa Traffic Rank
Alexa computes traffic rankings by analysing the Web usage of millions of Alexa toolbar users. The traffic rank is related to the last three months of traffic and is a combined measurement of 'reach' and page views. It is the task of Web designers to optimize their Web designs for high Search Engine ranking. Webmasters who seek high traffic ranks should undertake Web site promotion by utilizing search engine optimization techniques. Reach is the percentage of all Internet users who visit a particular site. In the following figure with the page set to Google, the Alexa position (seen next to 'info') is number 5 indicating that Google is the fifth most popular site on the World Wide Web. On the Google toolbar the PageRank (the green bar) is 10/10. Interestingly, the Google PageRank for www.yahoo.com is 9/10. The Alexa Traffic Ranking for the highest ranked pages shows the best site with the lowest number: 1 is the most frequently used Web site viz. Yahoo. The Alexa Traffic rank should be seen as an invaluable source of information for Web design and Web designers as they seek to optimize their Web pages and Web sites. First Web site Design Home Page >> Traffic is computed for sites, which are typically defined at the domain level and not for individual pages. The Alexa Traffic Ranking reflects both the number of users who visit the site and the number of pages viewed by these users. Alexa's one-week and three month average reach are measures of daily reach which then averaged over that time period. The three-month changes are determined by comparing the sites relating to current reach and reach rank compared to the values three months earlier. The Trend graph shows the three-day moving average. The daily traffic rank indicates the data for a single day. Alexa states that their traffic data are based on the set of Alexa users which may not perfectly reflect all surfers. The Alexa toolbar works only with Internet Explorer browser and therefore excludes all other browers that may be used. The AOL/Netscape users are largely excluded from the analysis. Similarly only Windows operating systems are included. The rate of Alexa users may vary in different according to langauge, locality and cultural status. Traffic rankings of 100,000 and above should be regarded as unreliable as the quantity of data received is not statistically significant.
