What is meant by "uploading"?

When you surf the Internet and look at the pages of various Web sites, a software program (browser) transfers data from a Web server to your computer. Programs that transfer data from one computer to another across the Internet are called "File Transfer Protocols" or FTP. The process of transferring from a Web server to your computer is known as downloading. When you develop  Web pages and also as you update them, you will need to transfer them to your Web server computer so that others can see them. The process of transferring your Web pages to your Web server is known as uploading. You will need an FTP program to perform this uploading for you. Most Web Authoring programs such as Frontpage have FTP uploading programs.

How can I transfer files from my computer to the Web server?

If you have a Web authoring program such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver, an FTP program is incorporated.

There are FTP uploading programs that you can download without charge from a variety of sources:

I would recommend Ipswitch: http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/file-transfer.html

You must enter your user ID and the password obtained from your Web Host as indicated the following Figure:-

You will then see two sets of columns. The left columns shows the Web pages that are on your computer (local) and the right columns show the files on the Host server. Double clicking on 'Name' will sort your pages according to the date they were last updated. Double clicking again on 'Name' reverses the order. I tend to sort on 'Date' which can similarly be ascending or descending.

Highlighting the appropriate files and clicking on the directional arrow will commence the file transfer.
