How do I make changes (updates) to my Web pages?

As Webmaster of your Web site you should:

  • update your Web pages regularly.

  • monitor your rankings on search engines for your main keywords.

  • enhance your Web pages to improve rankings.

  • reply quickly to correspondence such as email.

  • regularly check that links within your site and to other Web sites.

Making changes (updating) to editable areas of your Web pages is no different from making changes in programs such as word processors.

TAKE CARE IN MAKING CHANGES TO NAVIGATION SYSTEMS.

If you are using shared borders to Frontpage shared borders, remember that this will affect all the pages that use shared borders. You cannot change one shared border without affecting other pages.

In Frontpage, new pages should appear in the navigation bars as soon as you add them to the folders list and drag them onto your navigation chart. Avoid making changes to the navigation bars unless you are confident that this will have no untoward effect on other pages using this shared border.

Take advantage of the "Find and Replace facility" of your programs. I may wish, for example, to copy and paste some pages from files in other documents - the embedded links may have inappropriate sources. I find the "inappropriate source" and copy this into the 'find' box' and then make the correction in the 'replace' box. With Frontpage you can choose 'to find' across all of the web in the text or the HTML. There is a similar feature of finding and replacing in Dreamweaver and Microsoft Word.

When you have built your Web site and submitted it to the search engines, use your keyword list to check how the major search engines are ranking your keyword pages. I would strongly recommend using a program such as "Addweb" that can chart your progress - Search-Engine-Ranking.htm. If you find that some of your pages are not receiving high ranking, make alterations to the relevant pages and resubmit them. Experiment using the page optimization advice and record the alterations so that you can monitor your progress. I would also recommend that you place an unobtrusive record of the date that the page has been altered at the bottom of the page. When you wish to know how search engines have responded in terms of page ranking you can look at their cached record of the page to see the most recent time that the search engine has spidered that page. There may be a delay between the time the page is spidered by the search engine and the corresponding change in page ranking. It is advisable to make one or two changes to a few of your pages at a time. Record these changes and monitor how they affect your rankings.

How often should I update my Web site?

Web surfers want information that is up-to-date.  Some search engines will give higher ranking according to the latest updates.

Once you have created all your pages and sent them to your Host Server, you will need to update them from time to time. The frequency that you update your pages will depend on the nature of your Web site. If your pages have not reached the popularity that you seek, try to ascertain why this should be. It may be that you have to many bells and whistles that are taking too long to download and surfers do not hang around.

When you update some pages or the layout of your Web site, check that the fundamentals of Web site design remain in place. For example remember the three clicks rule.
