What is a search directory?

Search Directories are different from search engines. Whereas search engines use spiders or robots to index Web sites, directories use people. Yahoo, LookSmart, Open Directory Project (ODP), NBCi and Ask Jeeves are the top directories. The most popular search engines are presented on Search Engine Popularity.

Manual submission of the top (index) page and important pages is to be recommended rather than using submission programs. There is a suggestion that some search directories may automatically reject automated submissions. It has also been suggested that these directories only allow you one chance to submit so use it wisely!!
