What should be included in the META description tag?

After the page title, the META description is the most important tag in your page header. It should be written as one or more sentences. You should provide a brief description for each page. The most important keywords or phrases for the page should be included.  Many search engines use your META description in their list of ranked pages for a surfers search.  Spy on your competitors by looking in their HTML source to see how they have worded their META descriptions. In HTML a META description tag appears as follows:

<META NAME="description" CONTENT=" aa bb cc dd etc">

You may use variations of the keywords in the META description.

The following are examples of META descriptions from Web sites that have top 10 positioning on one or more major search engines:

Accountant -

"Accountants World: For a CPA or accountant. Find accounting, taxation, payroll, human resources, free CPE, write-up, trial balance and tax software info. News, discussions, and links to AICPA, IRS, FASB, GASB, GAAP, state accountancy boards and tax departments, and services for enrolled agents and tax preparers."

"Accounting learning for small businesses and students with glossary of accounting terms. Includes exhibits and calculators."

Accountant London

"City of London based, Winters are key business and financial advisers for a range of clients, UK and Worldwide. We have links with major financial institutions, lawyers and stockbrokers."

Lawyer

<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Lawinfo offers a searchable directory to find attorneys, lawyers, expert witnesses, paralegals, court reporters, private investigators, process servers, free legal forms ; other legal support services">

Stock Brokers:
