What can I learn from other Web sites? Be an internet spy! There is nothing to stop you from spying on top ranking sites to see how they have earned high rankings. I am not suggesting for a moment that you simply copy other peoples ideas. But there is nothing to stop you gaining ideas from competitor Web sites. So indulge in legitimate espionage. Once you have made the decision to develop your own Web site, you will be surfing the internet from a new perspective. When you visit a site that seems attractive and has high rankings on the search engines you should make a note of the following:
Figure - The Microsoft Home Page:-
Take a look at as many Web sites as you want but pay particular attention to Web sites that are of a similar category to the one you are planning to develop. You may find colour schemes, layout and numerous ideas that you may be able to adjust to your own requirements. It is so easy to conduct 'espionage' of competing sites on the internet. You do not need to be clandestine. Just go to the competitors Web site and look at the 'source' on their top pages. You can even look at the way a Web site has been constructed. Below you will see the front page of the Microsoft Web site. You can look at the META keywords and META description for the page and these may give you invaluable guidance for your own site.
If you are planning on building an e-commerce Web site, take a look at the Web sites of some of your competitors and see how they operate. The META keywords and description for the above page can be seen by right clicking on an empty area of the page and double-clicking the "View Source".
