Backgrounds are the colors, textures, patterns, or designs that cover your Web pages. Backgrounds come in various styles and designs (borders, tiles, tops, triple backgrounds, framed, and tables and they are available in many colors, textures and patterns. You may find some backgrounds with sets of matching graphic elements

The background and text colours used determines how easy it is for your Web pages to be read. Use text that contrasts with the background colour thus ensuring ease of reading. The tendency has become to use dark text on a light background

It is the task of Web designers to optimize each Web design for high Search Engine ranking. Web spiders are pattern blind. That is to say that beautiful though your pages may look the spiders only look at the HTML behind your pages. Web directories, however,  such as Yahoo are visited by real people and high quality visual presentation may score heavily with them.

Spend some time looking at background and text combinations around the  web to find one that you find attractive. A plain background causes less problem than a textured background with text legibility. Some artists provide sets of graphics including the background, borders and frequently used buttons such as 'Welcome' and 'email'.
