What is link popularity?
It is in the interest of search engines to ensure that they provide the best best quality results for Web surfers (search engines). Webmasters would then place as many links as possible both within their site and between other sites that they maintained. If you look at the top twenty Web sites for a given keyword or phrase you can check on their link popularity. Some of these pages may have hundred of links. One or two, however, may have one or two linking pages at most; this would indicate that at the time of writing, link popularity per se may not be a significant variable in the Search Engine Algorithm.
You may try to improve your ranking by exchanging links with other Web sites particularly if they are relevant to your site. You can usually find an email address on their Web site.
Link exchange (reciprocal linking) will eventually tire you. The amount of work required contacting other webmasters is potentially enormous and the number of links established is small.
